Music marketing process (1)

Music Marketing

Post 1: Planning and brainstorming

 Megan Kelly 1/26/2024

For me and my groups music marketing project, we begun with selecting the song for our campaign. We knew we had to create a whole persona to base our marketing and purpose on. Quickly, we developed the type of feeling we wanted to add to our band. After this was all discussed and layed out on a document, we created the band members. Although we did not need to include such specifics, we made backstories to hold why they did what they did. We had a lot of fun with this, eventually deciding to back our campaign with the intent to raise money for cancer cure and support.

After creating the persona and backstory of our band, we moved into the planning of the music video, we originally had planned to make a promotion video, but ideas bloomed and we turned into a storyline. Despite the dark elements to the video, the music is oddly upbeat and contrasting to the content of the video. We did this to match the persona of the band. They are a very persisting group who has been through a lot, yet is still smiling through it all.

After developing our plan for the music video, we began to develop ideas for distributing the content, marketing it, and getting it popular. We additionally added how we could bring this bands profit to help aid the world, for cancer.

We created a website which has a brand merch line, where most the purchase money go to cancer funding for families in need and for research on cures. We additionally came up with performance schedules to help grow the bands name and promote them to the world.

We found it's so much information to take in and plan out, you constantly have to run through to check for any loopholes and if the process makes sense. Its time consuming to build the brand name and we additionally have to put together a very well drafted piece that not just promotes music but also adds to the persona of the band.

Representation in Films

 REPRESENTATION IN DEAD POETS SOCIETY

The film Dead Poets Society (1989) is a coming of age film focusing on a boys private school and the hardships of the characters it focuses on.

The group it focuses on is teenage boys placed in high academic private schools. Many of these boys have high hopes from their parents riding on them from a young age. They struggle to find freedom and a sense of childhood from the pressure their parents give them.

One particular character is Neil Perry. Despite being enrolled in this prestigious school, he has a desire to be an actor. His father decides thoroughly against it. Due to the time setting of this film, Neil wouldn't dare go against his fathers word originally until he meets Todd and his teacher, Mr. Keating.

Mr. Keating teaches all these boys, giving them life lessons instead of just English's lessons. He gets them to open up and live a little, which lets the boys grow and mature from their former constricted lives.

Despite the film not being a queer film, there are many critiques and implications of Neil and Todd showing interest in each other. They find comfort together without actually being together, highlighting their friendship.

Mr. Keating encourages Neil to find his passion in theatre, so he signs up for a role despite his fathers wishes, his friends all supporting him. As his father finds out he is in the play and comes to see it, he only reprimands Neil, telling him he must follow his fathers path he has carved out for him. This brings it to Neil's attention he will never live his life the way he wants it to, which is sadly a very common thing for children with demanding parents.

Neil kills himself that night later on in the movie, feeling trapped in life. This representation of mental health and awareness to kids personal needs and dreams in life is amazing. It captures the sadness and harsh reality some people may face, despite others feeling uncomfortable about the fact this happens in the world.

The rest of the boys, finding out about this news are devasted, seemingly put into shock that this has happened. As Mr. Keating gets fired for supposedly having a hand in this significant event, the students riot. They liked Mr. Keating despite his odd teaching, and all they wanted was for him to come back. He taught them a important lesson in life that must be learned, and this film spreads the lesson. It teaches you to live how you want to live, despite the odds. To try to do what makes you happy despite it all. It also brings attention to young men's struggling lifestyles with the pressure layed upon them in high end schools.

Genre Research

 Why is dystopian so encaptivating?

The dystopian movie genre is often loved among most people. Movies such as Hunger games, Maze runner, and Divergent are worldwide known film series that have made millions.

Typically, the target audience for dystopian movies is young adults and teenagers. The dystopian genre usually consists of a futuristic and apocalyptic plot. The main character is commonly facing the hardships of our future world as pictured in the movies. There is lots of suspense, and a very common trope of the protagonist being very alone. The production usually creates many shots and uses many techniques to enhance the main character seeming like its them against the world.

Love and Monsters, 2020.

Dystopian movies are very frequently marketed by enhancing the effect to 'warn' the viewers about the future of our earth. They portray the earth as a shitty place to live in in the future. They appeal to many younger audience as they are more likely to adhere to the topic of earths future. This is due to them having a big question mark when it comes to thinking about their futures, the world could change so much for them and many love to think about what will happen. Additionally, many people love to see the trope of a protagonist against all odds yet still pushing through and succeeding.

The Matrix Resurrections (2021)

The Matrix movie series is a popular dystopia film which enhances the dystopian genre. For example, it is about a plot where the protagonist, Neo, has stumbled upon a 'loophole'. It indicates that in the future, everyone is hooked up to a system that feeds off their bioelectric power, meanwhile keeping them in a brain simulation of every day life. The protagonist and his crew has to figure out how to save everyone, and cease the matrix. This appeals to many because of many conspiracy theories. Conspiracy theories entrance people about the future of our world. The constant "What if?" question is commonly talked about amongst younger generations, and the Matrix is a great example of Dystopian genre.

The Maze Runner (2014)

The Maze Runner is a film series that made millions on the trilogy of a dystopian plot. The plot develops over the progress of the three films. Originally, the book series consists of six books, but when the movies were created they were turned into three. The movie series focuses on a main male character, who is placed into a maze amongst a group of boys. Their goal is to survive and escape. Towards the end of the movie, the plot thickens and it turns out it was just a simulation to find a cure for the virus that has struck the world, leaving it dying and suffering. The boys who are seemingly "immune" to the world wiping disease have to fight to take down the evil system that is making a new "clean" world. SOUND PROJECT

 Sound Project

My sound project was a soundscape of trick or treating night. In this night, a group of kids wandered to a house, knocking on the door. In this house, there was a dog. When the owner opened the door, the dog ran free, the owner chasing it. Finally, he was caught and the owner gave out candy to the kids, them leaving after.

Soundscape planning.docx

During this project, me and my partner first gathered all the sounds, placing them into a file. We both gathered our collective sounds. We got a few different sounds for each singular object just incase we embedded it and disliked how it turned out. After, we started onto the work. We linked all the very last background noises such as night ambience of crickets, chatter, skateboard, laughter, and more. Afterwards, we began to layer.

We layered based of the characters. Their footsteps and movements came first. Than we brought in the sounds of the house becoming closer and louder to the viewers ears. As we embedded the action noises of the dog escaping, we changed the noise levels of each object. The perspective stuck with the children, so the dog barks receded when it ran away. Using keyframes on the audio we accomplished this. To finish it off, we listened to the overall sound and made small tweaks to fade out ending sounds so they weren't as abrupt to stop.
